__The institute was established in 1926 as the Ukrainian Scientific-Research Institute of Water Economy. The institute has been created at the initiative of an outstanding hydrologist, academician Evhen Volodymyrovych Oppokov. The institute activity has been directed to solve important applied problems of hydraulic engineering construction in Ukraine. In 1936 SRI of Water Economy was transferred to the Academy of Sciences of the Urk.SSR.

__In 1964 the Institute of Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering of AS of the Urk.SSR has been reorganized into the Institute of Hydromechanics of AS of the Urk.SSR.

__The institute performs fundamental and applied investigations on two scientific directions: hydromechanics of movable objects and turbulent flows; hydromechanics of water streams and hydraulic engineering.

__The institute scientists have made considerable contribution into development of hydrodynamics, acoustics, hydraulics and hydraulic engineering.

__The Institute of Hydromechanics has a unique experimental base, including research pool, a big hydrodynamic pipe, and experimental-research range in Kyilov. The institute has performed researches of flow structure of all bridge crossings of Kyiv and many other hydraulic engineering constructions of Ukraine at the experimental base.

__The institute is the coordinating centre on fluids mechanics in Ukraine, the centre of professional training of the highest qualification. The Institute has the Specialized Council on defense of doctor’s theses on mechanics of fluids, gas and plasma, acoustics.

__Hrynchenko Victor Tymofiyovych - the director of the Institute. He was born in 1937 in Poltava. Has graduated in 1959 from mechanic-mathematical faculty of Shevchenko Kyiv State University. Doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, Professor, academician of NAS of Ukraine. The famous scientist in acoustics and fluids mechanics.

__A member of Russian Acoustic Society, the Acoustic Union of the USA. A member of management of the International Institute on Acoustics and Fluctuations. The editor-in-chief of magazines "Acoustic Bulletin", "Applied Hydromechanics", International. Jоuгnаl оf Fluid Mechanics Research. Laureate of the state award of the Ukr.SSR (1989), O. Dynnyk’s award of NASU (1984), M. Yanhel’s award of ASU (1992). Honored worker of science and technics of Ukraine.
