__The electric welding institute was created by academician Evhen Oskarovych Paton in 1934.

__E.O. Paton has managed to provide huge prospects of development of technology of electric welding of metals - a child of talented Russian inventors M.M. Benardos and M.H. Slavanov.

__On August 12, 1953 the domestic and world science has had a hard loss - Evhen Oskarovych Paton has passed away at the age of 84, the person which has added a bright page to history of a domestic science and technics. Pupils and followers, all collective of the Institute adequately continue his business.

__Since 1953 and up till this day his son academician Borys Evhenovych Paton is the director of the Institute.

__One of the most considerable achievements of the Institute in the beginning of 1950s was a creation of new technology of thick metal welding.

__Later there has been created the welding method with a thin wire in carbonic gas which has received wide application in the industry and has provided considerable growth of level of mechanization of welding works.

__At the Institute scale researches in the field of electron beam welding have been started.

__Physical and technological features of new technological processes of contact fusion welding have been studied.

__Throughout many years the Institute carries out research on welding in space.

__In 1984 there has been performed the extremely important, prepared by EWI experiment overboard of orbital station in free space. In this experiment the astronauts S. Savytska and V. Dzhanibekov for the first time worked in free space with hand electron beam tool "URI", carrying out processes of welding, brazing, soldering, cutting and spraying. That is how space technology was started which has great importance in the program of development of space. The period since 1985 till 2000 is characterized by the further development of space technologies.

__Nowadays the electric welding Institute performs works on development of practically all modern processes of applying protective and restorative coverings. Units and technology are developed for a plasma-arc spraying of wear-resistant coverings, and also unit for a detonation spraying.

__Last years there had appeared one more direction - electric welding of soft tissue of live organisms. Results of these researches have found application in practice of surgical operations on human being.

__Today the Institute is the main organization of the Scientific and technical complex "E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute" which also includes a research design-technological bureau, the experimental manufacture, three research factories, several engineering centers.

__In all subsections of the establishment there are about 3500 persons, 1650 persons of them work at the Institute. The scientific potential of the Institute is made by 390 scientific employees among who 9 are academicians and 8 corresponding members, 75 doctors of sciences and more than 200 candidates of sciences.

__In an active of scientists of the Institute there are unique results of knowledge of physics of the arc category and low-temperature plasmas, properties of powerful extremely focalized electron beams, fusion nature, steaming, crystallization and condensation of metals, physical and chemical and heat physical processes of welding and refining remelts, hardness and reliability of welded joints and constructions which are realized in specific technologies, materials and the equipment.

__Results of these works are confirmed by foreign and domestic patents. The institute has received over 6500 copyright certificates, 2600 patents of Ukraine, Russia and far abroad, and also has realized over 150 licenses in the USA, Germany, Japan, Russia, Sweden, France, China, etc.

__The institute supports wide international contacts with the leading centers on welding in Europe, the USA, Asia, is a member of the International Institute Welding and European Welding Federation. On the basis of the Institute there is Interstate scientific council concerning welding and related technologies of the CIS countries and International Association "Welding".

__Today the Electric Welding Institute does the powerful contribution to the further development of welding and related processes, and also at solving of priority problems of economy and industrial production of Ukraine.
