__Kovaliuk Zakhar Dmytrovych was born on March 6, 1940 in Mamaivtsi of Kitsmansky district of Chernivtsi oblast. In 1961 he has graduated from physical and mathematical faculty of Yury Fedkovych Chernivtsi University.

__Since 1990 up till today he is the head of Chernivtsi Branch of I.M. Frantsevych IPMS of NAS of Ukraine.

__Chernivtsi Branch of I.M. Frantsevych Institute for Problems of Materials Science of NAS of Ukraine was established in 1969 at the Institute of Semi-Conductors of AS of Ukr.SSR. Since 1976 the Chernivtsi Branch is a part of I.M. Frantsevych Institute for Problems of Materials Science of NAS of Ukraine.

__The mainstreams of the Branch scientific activity are:

__- Theoretical researches of magnetic nano-structures on the basis of different semi-conducting compounds for their use in spin electronics.

__- Development of nano-technologies and nano-physics of materials with laminate crystal structure.

__- Working out of technology of new cathodic materials for lithium power supplies and electrodes for super-condensers of super-large capacity.

__- Working out of radiation-resistant photosensitive hetero-structures on the basis of laminate crystals.

__- Reception technology and complex researches of small-gap semi-conductors and solid solutions on their basis, alloyed with elements with replaceable valency, - perspective materials for application in optoelectronics.

__- Working out of the newest nano-technologies of creation and research of nano-powders, nano-tubes, quantum points on the basis of laminate crystals.

__The Chernivtsi Branch co-operates with Adam Mickiewicz’s University (Poznan, Poland), Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Warsaw), the Higher Engineering school (Lisbon, Portugal), Institute of Physics of Microstructures (Gaul, Germany), Technical University (Poznan, Poland), Institute of Physics of Semi-Conductors (Kyiv), Yury Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.

__The research results of the employees of CB IPMS of NASU are published in national and foreign publications.

__Professional training is carried out through postgraduate study of Chernivtsi Branch on a specialty 01.04.10 - "Physics of semiconductors and dielectrics".

__The Branch performs inventor and patent-license work, receives patents of Ukraine on lithium power supplies and memory condensers.
