__Valentyn Pidhirsky is an academician of NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of biology, Professor, director of D. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of NAS of Ukraine, outstanding scientist in microbiology and biotechnology, honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine. Laureate of the National Prize of Ukraine in the science and technology, laureate of D. Zabolotny and I. Mechnikov’s prize of NAS of Ukraine.

__Scientific interests of V. Pidhirsky as a professional are, first of all, research of fundamental issues of growth regulation and biosynthetic activity of yeast, lactic acid bacteria, nocardio and coryneforms, their systematic position and regularity of expansion in nature, development and creation of new biotechnological preparations, products and processes for industrial, medical, agricultural and environmental protection use.

__V. Pidhirsky is the author of more than 350 scientific works, including 3 monographs and 45 inventions. The scientist pays much attention to the future specialists. He has taught microbiology for many years at Kyiv T. Shevchenko National University. Under his guidance there were prepared 4 doctoral and 17 candidates theses.

__D. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of NAS of Ukraine (IMV of NAS of Ukraine) has been established on May 31, 1928 by academician D. Zabolotny, a world-known scientist and president of Ukrainian Academy of Science at that time.

__IMV of NAS of Ukraine is a powerful science center in research of ecology, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics of microorganisms, fundamental researches of viruses and creation of their control methods. Fundamental works of the Institute are the basis for development of contemporary biotechnology.

__Nowadays Institute consists of 13 science departments and 3 scientific laboratories. The Institute has 97 candidates and 28 doctors of science, among them there is an academician of NAS of Ukraine, academician of Ukraine UAAS, 5 corresponding members of NAS of Ukraine.

__In post-war period 32 Institute workers have received 12 National Prizes in sphere of science and technology of the USSR and Ukraine.

__Kateryna Andreyuk

__She was born on November 27, 1927. She has graduated from Odessa I. Mechnikov State University in 1951 and postgraduate study at IMV of NAS of Ukraine in 1954. Since 1951 she has worked at D. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of NASU as junior, senior, leading scientific worker, head of general and ground microbiology department (1968-1993). Candidate of biology (1955). Doctor of biology (1969). Professor (1981). Corresponding member of NASU (1982). Honored worker of science of the USSR (1979).

__Laureate of D. Zabolotny’s reward (1974) and reward of Council of Ministers of the USSR (1983). Awarded the order "Honor Sign" (1971).

__The sphere of professional interest is general and ground microbiology, ecology of microorganisms. She is the author of more than 270 scientific works, including 12 monographs. Under her leadership 3 doctoral and 16 candidate dissertations were composed.

__Nadiya Kovalenko

__She was born in 1937.

__Since 1986 she is the leading scientific worker. Candidate of biology (1971). Doctor of biology (1991). Professor (1999). Corresponding member of NAS of Ukraine (2000). Laureate of the National Prize of Ukraine (1989, 1997).

__She was given order of Princess Olha (2003), medals, I. Mechnikov’s prize (2005).

__The sphere of professional interest is biology, ecology, systematic, gene identification and growth regularity of lactic acid bacteria and bifidus bacteria. Due to her participation there was developed probiotic for human and farm animals and products of functional nutrition.

__She is the author of more than 220 scientific works, including monographs; she has 22 certificates of authorship and patents. Under her guidance 8 candidate dissertations were composed.

__Bohdan Mazelukh

__Corresponding member of NAS of Ukraine

__He was born in 1932. He has graduated from Lviv Medical Institute in 1959 and postgraduate study at D. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of NASU in 1963. Candidate (1964) and Doctor (1980) of biology, Professor (1986).

__Laureate of D. Zabolotny’s award (1989), State prize of Ukraine in science and technology (1991), honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine (2003).

__ The sphere of professional interest is genetics of streptomycin, biosynthesis of new antibiotics, selection and introduction in industrial use of microorganisms such as producers of antibiotic and vitamins. He is the author of more than 250 scientific works, including 3 monographs, 10 certificates of authorship and patents. Under his direction 12 candidates dissertations are performed.

__Ivan Skrypal

__Corresponding member of NAS of Ukraine

__He was born in 1939 in Skrypali of Sumy oblast. He has graduated from the department of plants protection at Ukraine Agricultural Academy, in 1968 he has graduated from postgraduate study at IMV of NAS of Ukraine (1983-2005), worked as deputy director of scientific work at the Institute (1984 up till now). He is a leading scientific worker of micro plasma department (2005 up till now). Candidate of biology (1969). Senior scientific worker (1972). Doctor of biology (1984). Professor (1996). Corresponding member of NASU (1992). Laureate of D. Zabolotny’s award of NAS of Ukraine (1996), National prize of Ukraine in sphere of science and technology (2001). Honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine (2005).

__The circle of his scientific interest includes problems of phytopathology, microbiology, micro plasma, molecular biology, history of science. He is the author of about 400 scientific works, including 3 monographs and 1 invention (patent). Under his guidance 15 candidates’ dissertations are conducted.

__Mykola Spivak

__Corresponding member of NAS of Ukraine

__He was born in 1994. Graduated from Uzhhorod State University in 1970 and from postgraduate studies of IMV of NAS of Ukraine in 1973.

__Since 1980 till now ha has worked at D. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of NASU as a leading scientific coworker, a head of laboratory and created by him a department of interferon and immune grid problems (1992). Candidate (1974), Doctor of biology (1988), Professor (1992).

__Laureate of D. Zabolotny’s Prize of NAS of Ukraine (2001), Mechnikov’s Prize of NAS of Ukraine (2003), State Prize of Ukraine in science and technology (2005).

__He was awarded Honored certificate of Kyiv City Head (2005), the Certificate of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (2007), gold medal of the World Organization of Intellectual Property (2002, Switzerland), gold medal of EAPE of the USSR (1985), I. Pavlov’s silver medal (2000, Russia).

__He is the author of 436 scientific works, 8 monographs, 4 manuals, has 68 patents of Russia and Ukraine and copyrights of the USSR. He has prepared 5 doctors and 17 candidates of science.
