__Institute of Carpathians Ecology of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was founded in 1991 on the base of Lviv department of M. Kholodnyi Institute of Botany of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Lviv). Its main directions of activity are complex study of ecological systems and social geosystems of Ukrainian Carpathians and neighbouring territories; reasoning of ways of regulation of their structure and control over ecosystematic and social geosystematic processes with the aim of optimization of useful functions; development and perfection of methods of protection of biological variety and provision of stable development of Carpathian region; study of mechanisms of plant ontogenesis and structural and functional changeability of populations under the influence of exterior factors.

__The institute possesses the only in Ukraine high-mountain biological stationery for fifty years already; there is a scientific herbarium whose fond is enriched by collections from European countries. The institute is a co-executor of several European ecologic and nature-protection projects and has agreements of cooperation with Shafer Institute of Botany, Institute of Zoology and Institute of Agrarian Physics PAN (Poland), Institute of Botany SAN (Slovakia), Marburg University (Germany), Gratz University (Austria); it holds mutual expeditions with Polish, Slovakian, Austrian, German, Russian and Swiss specialists.

__32 research workers carry out scientific studies, including one academician of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 6 doctors and 23 candidates of science. Since 2000 the institute periodically issues thematic collection "Scientific bases of saving of biotic variety".

__Academician of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (general biology)

__He was born on October, 30, 1930 in the village Velykyi Liubin in Lviv region. He is an honoured director of the institute, honoured figure of science and technology of Ukraine, professor, doctor of biological sciences, eminent scientist in spheres of botany, ecology, forest study and protection of nature, well-known public and political figure. He is a laureate of state prize in sphere of science and technology of Ukraine. He is a people’s deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of the first convocation. In December, 1991 he took part in Bilovezhska meeting of the heads of Russia, Byelorussia and Ukraine. He published over 400 works in ground study, botany, forest phytocenology, ecological systems and social geosystems during the period of his scientific activity. He is an author of 12 monographs and editor of 20 collective works and monographs.

__Mykola Kozlovskyi (born in 1956) executes functions of director of the institute. He is a doctor of biological sciences, author of over 120 scientific works in spheres of ecology, ecological systems, protection of biologic variety and ground zoology.
