PRYLUKY - A CITY OF COSSACKS’ GLORY
__Pryluky is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine that is located on the picturesque banks of the Uday River. It has a rich, glorious, heroic and sometimes tragic history.
__The archaeologists suggest that there was a settlement on the territory of the modern city in 2 BC, the Bronze era.
__The Prince Volodymyr Monomakh left the first written note about Pryluky to the descendants. In his writing "The Pouchenie" he told his children how in 1085 he went out with his troop from Pereyaslav towards Polovtsi horde that came to Posullya again. Meeting horde troops in the field the Prince avoided clashes and entered the "Pryluky City" under the protection of the fortress walls. Pulling themselves up he made his army against the attackers and destroyed them near Pryluky. It happened at the "Vladychytsa Day", i.e. at the feast of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15) or Birth of Virgin Mary (September 8) in 1085. This victory is the first glorious page in the history of the ancient city, and an evidence of this is the majestic monument in a historic area of the city.
__During its long history the city has been devastated by enemies. In 1239 Pryluky was almost completely destroyed by Mongol-Tatar hordes. In 1362 Pereyaslav Princedom which included Pryluky City was occupied by the Lithuanian feudal lords. After the Lublin Union in 1569 the city became a part of the Polish gentry. And since 1648 till 1781 Pryluky had been the center of Pryluky Cossack regiment which existed for 133 years.
__In the second half of the 18th century Pryluky was relatively a large city.
__All main building of the city were located on the territory of the castle: Yarema Vishnevetsky’s Palace was built in 1647, the wooden churche of Virgin Mary in 1618, Preobrazhenska Church in 1653, Regiment Magistrate House, Regimental Court, regimental treasury, gunpowder cellar, ammunition depot, jail, city hall, the estate of the Colonel and regimental chiefs, shops. Separate buildings of the fortress were connected with a secret underground paths; that time those paths led to outside the fortress in case of a prolonged siege of the city.
__At different times Pryluky Regiment was commanded by the Colonel Ivan Shkurat-Melnychenko who heroically died in the battle near Berestechko, Tymish Nosach - fellow-soldier of B. Khmelnytsky, Petro Doroshenko - honored hetman of Ukraine, Ivan Storozhenko - the founder of the famous Cossack family, Dmytro Gorlenko - fellow-soldier of the hetman Ivan Mazepa, after the death of which he was one of the pretendents for Hetman’s mace. As one local historian said, "...15 years of Dmytro’s ruling for Pryluky regiment was the best time. During this time Gorlenko restored, extended and made stronger Pryluky fortress, built a new Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1697, started two fairs in the city: Ivanivsky and Dmytrivsky which existed for more than two centuries. To perpetuate his name and the name of his patron and friend - Hetman Mazepa - on his own funds he built Ivano-Dmytrivska Church in Kvashyntsya and also Mykolayivska and Petro-Pavlivska Churches in Hustyni which still exist.
__Cossacks of Pryluky regiment participated, for example, in the Azov (1696), Persian (1722) and Hilyansky (1726) campaigns, the Russo-Turkish wars (1735-1739 and 1768-1774).
__In the second half of the 17th century the city was a significant trade and craft center. Annually Pryluky had three fairs and in the second half of the nineteenth century the city had 5 fairs. After 1917 the fairs in Pryluky didn’t happen. In 2001 there was revived Vozdvyzhensky Fair which acquired an international status in 2008.
__At the end of first half of the 17th century a lot of artisans worked in rural land of Pryuday.
